Emotional eating is exactly what it sounds like. It is eating driven by emotion rather than true hunger.
Have you ever eaten when you’re sad, lonely, angry, anxious or stressed? What about when you’re bored? Ever grab a snack just before sitting down to work on a project? Have you ever found yourself eating in anticipation of being hungry? And how many times have you eaten because you were celebrating or relaxing or were handed food by a well meaning friend or family member?
These are all forms of emotional eating. While we may all find ourselves in these situations occasionally, the emotional eater finds themselves in these situations often - so often, actually, that they lose sight of what it feels like to be naturally hungry and full.
These habits become hard to break and often lead to weight gain, lethargy, discomfort, poor body image, anxiety, frustration, sadness and a potential slew of health problems.
Maybe you have recognized yourself in this situation before and you’ve tried to fix the problem by going on a cleanse or a detox or the latest diet. And maybe you found short term success with these avenues only to suffer the disappointment of eventually winding up where you started, wondering what you did wrong.
I’m here to tell you that you did nothing “wrong”. You’ve been led to believe that diets work. We live in a culture led by a an industry that makes money off of weightloss products and supplements that promise nothing more than false hope in a bottle. We live in a society saturated by conflicting messages of what it means to be healthy.
The truth of the matter is that diets do not work. They are a short term solution to deeply rooted behavior and habits that have been formed over the span of many years, perhaps decades.
Diets focus on fixing the outside without paying attention to a crucial piece of the puzzle - addressing the inside.
You can put a bandaid over a deep wound for only so long. Targeting the symptoms is an exercise in futility. You must identify the underlying cause of the pain so that you can begin to establish new patterns that become lifelong habits.
